Proskin Soap Permethrin 1% soap is an anti-parasitic medicated soap used primarily to treat infestations of scabies and head lice. It works by paralyzing and killing the mites, lice, and their eggs.

Ingredients of Proskin Soap

The primary active ingredient is Permethrin 1% w/w. 

Ø  Active Ingredient: Permethrin (1.0%) is a synthetic pyrethroid that acts as a neurotoxin to the mites and lice, causing paralysis and death.

Ø  Other Ingredients: Inactive ingredients can vary by brand but often include a soap base, perfume, and sometimes additional soothing agents like Cetrimide or Menthol. 

How to Use Proskin Soap

Always follow the specific instructions provided by your doctor or the product label. General guidelines include: 

Ø  Preparation: Ensure your skin is clean, dry, and cool before application.

Ø  Application: Gently rub the soap into the affected areas of the body and/or scalp to produce a lather. For scabies, it's typically applied from the neck down; for head lice, it's applied to the hair and scalp.

Ø  Leave On Time: Leave the lather on the skin for 5 to 10 minutes (for soaps) before washing off. For permethrin creams or lotions, this time is typically 8 to 14 hours, but the soap formulation is much shorter.

Ø  Rinsing: Rinse thoroughly with water after the specified time.

Ø  Frequency: Often, one application is sufficient, but a second application may be needed after 7 days if the infestation persists, as advised by a doctor. 

Side Effects of Proskin Soap

Common side effects are usually mild and temporary. 

Ø  Common Side Effects:

v  Mild burning, stinging, or tingling sensations at the application site.

v  Skin redness, rash, or irritation.

v  Itching (this can be an allergic reaction to dead mites and may persist for a few weeks after successful treatment).

Ø  Serious Side Effects (seek immediate medical attention):

v  Severe allergic reactions like swelling of the face, lips, or throat.

v  Difficulty breathing or wheezing.

v  Infected or pus-filled areas on the skin. 

Ø  Important Precautions:

v  For external use only; avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or nose.

v  To prevent reinfestation, wash all clothing, bedding, and personal care items in hot water after treatment.
